Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Element: Light

Color: Indigo

Location: Forehead, brow, carotid plexus, third eye

The sixth chakra, known as the third eye chakra, is the center of perception and pattern recognition. Often called the “seeing” chakra, its purpose goes beyond physical sight. While its element, light, allows us to see the external world, the third eye chakra is responsible for inner vision—the ability to perceive truths that can’t be detected with the eyes alone. It’s the energy center that allows us to “see” beyond the surface, tapping into intuition and deeper understanding.

This chakra governs the internal screen where memory, imagination, dreams, and archetypes come to life. It’s where our intuition, gut feelings, and inner wisdom reside, guiding us through life with insight that transcends logic. The third eye chakra helps us make sense of the world by connecting the dots between what we see externally and what we understand internally. It is our inner teacher, the source of intuition that leads us toward clarity and meaning in our everyday experiences.

What happens when the third eye chakra is open?

When the third eye chakra is open, there is a deep sense of intuition and clarity that connects both body and mind. People with a balanced third eye chakra have a heightened awareness of their inner world and can easily tap into their instincts and gut feelings. Their memory is sharp, often allowing them to recall past experiences and dreams in vivid detail. With an open third eye, imagination becomes a powerful tool, and they are able to visualize their desires and goals with clarity.

An open third eye chakra enhances perception, allowing individuals to see beyond the surface of things. They have a strong ability to think symbolically, making connections between concepts, ideas, and experiences. This expanded inner vision helps them not only understand their surroundings but also envision their future with a sense of purpose. When the third eye chakra is balanced, people feel connected to their intuition, enabling them to navigate life with a deep sense of trust in their inner wisdom.

What happens when the third eye chakra is closed off?

When the third eye chakra is blocked or closed off, a person may feel disconnected from their imagination and intuition. This can lead to insensitivity, a poor memory, and difficulty visualizing or envisioning the future. With a lack of energy in the third eye, it becomes challenging to trust gut feelings or make clear decisions, leaving a person feeling stuck or uncertain about which direction to take in life.

A closed third eye chakra can also result in a narrow perspective, where someone only sees the world in a single, rigid way and believes it’s the only correct view. This lack of openness can create denial, preventing growth and deeper understanding. Without the flow of intuitive insight, it can feel impossible to connect with one’s inner wisdom, making it difficult to set or pursue goals and dreams. When the third eye is blocked, there’s often a sense of being disconnected from your path and lacking the clarity needed to move forward.

What happens when there is too much energy in the third eye chakra?

When there is excess energy in the third eye chakra, it can lead to overwhelming mental activity and distorted perceptions. People with an overactive third eye chakra may experience hallucinations, delusions, or vivid nightmares, which can be unsettling. Their inner vision becomes so intense that it disconnects them from reality, making it hard to distinguish between what is imagined and what is real.

In some cases, this excess energy can manifest as obsessive thinking, where individuals fixate on certain ideas or situations, making it difficult to focus on anything outside of their mental patterns. This fixation can create a sense of isolation, as they become consumed by their inner world and struggle to engage with the external one. Balancing the third eye chakra is essential to grounding this energy, allowing for healthy intuition and clear vision without becoming lost in excessive mental imagery or fantasy.

How do I open my third eye chakra?

To open the third eye chakra, visualization is a powerful tool. Creating a consistent practice that resonates with you is key to unlocking this energy center. Meditation and guided visualizations are commonly used to strengthen inner vision and cultivate a deeper connection with your intuition. Through these practices, you can begin to see beyond the surface and tap into your inner wisdom.

In addition, therapeutic methods such as psychotherapy, dream work, and creative practices like coloring and drawing can help open the third eye chakra. These activities connect images with emotions and allow you to explore your inner landscape in a meaningful way. Working with memory, imagination, and symbolic thinking helps to enhance your intuitive abilities, making it easier to access the insights and clarity that come from a balanced third eye chakra.
