What is Sound Bath Meditation?

A Sound Bath is a deeply-immersive, full-body listening experience that intentionally uses sound to invite gentle therapeutic and restorative processes to nurture your mind & body.

The Basics

As its name suggests, a sound bath is a meditative experience in which participants are “bathed” in sound waves. These sound waves are produced by various sources, including healing instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, percussion, chimes, rattles, tuning forks, and even the human voice. The music doesn’t have a catchy melody or rhythm like you’d experience at a concert. Instead, it is a carefully selected blend of soundscapes with resonance and overtones. Overtones are all pitches higher than the lowest pitch within an specific sound—for example, xylophones produce non-harmonic overtones.

Get Comfortable

During the sound bath, participants lie on their backs—Savasana position—for the entire experience.

Intention

Sound baths use frequencies which correspond to specific energy centers in your body. The intention is alter and help balance the energy centers of the participants. During a sound bath, you don’t want to hook into a melody. You don’t want to repeat things because you don’t want the brain to recognize a repeated beat. Instead, you want participants to release their preconceived notions and force your brain into an intensely relaxed state.
